About Me

Hello! My name is Alex Scheepens, and I’m a Ph.D. candidate in History at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. I received my B.A. in International Relations and History (2014) and M.A. in European Studies (2016), both from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and completed a second M.A. in History at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (2021).

Drawing on written and oral sources in multiple languages, including Dutch, Hebrew, English, and German, my dissertation examines the Jewish hiding experience in the Nazi-occupied Netherlands. My work engages deeply with issues of gender, childhood, transnationalism, space, and the emotional landscape of war, while contributing to broader understandings of displacement, belonging, trauma, identity, and memory formation.

My research has been supported by the Claims Conference; the George L. Mosse Program in Jewish History; the Holocaust Educational Foundation of Northwestern University; the European Holocaust Research Infrastructure; the American Academy for Jewish Research; and the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum.
